Chewy Sugar Cookies with Sprinkles

Hi friends! I've got a fun recipe to share with you today. This is my go-to recipe for sugar cookies. They're thick, chewy, and buttery. I think I've gained 5 pounds just looking at the pictures :-D.

This recipe is perfect for a quick sugar cookie; the chill time is minimal. If you choose to skip the chilling, the cookies will spread and be thin & chewy. If that's your fave, then go for it! I've done it both ways, but personally I prefer the thicker cookies. I like to use about 1 1/2 tablespoons of dough for these cookies to make them nice and large.
These cookies are delicious without sprinkles....but they are SO PRETTY and festive with them. Don't be shy about covering the entire thing. More sprinkles!!!
Wouldn't these be cute for a birthday party? Or you know...just any random night at home watching Gilmore girls re-runs. Yeah...that too. ;-)
Okay so let's get to the recipe, shall we? Hope y'all enjoy.

Chewy Sugar Cookies with Sprinkles
  • 2 3/4 c all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 c butter (softened)
  • 1 1/2 c sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2-3 tbsp buttermilk or regular milk
  • 1 bottle sprinkles
In a large bowl, or bowl of your stand mixer, cream the butter & sugar. Add in egg and vanilla until blended & mixture is fluffy. Add in the flour, baking soda & powder, and continue to mix on low until the dough comes together. The dough will be on the dry side, so add just enough buttermilk to give you a soft (not wet!!) mixture. Chill the dough for 10 minutes in the freezer or 30 minutes in the fridge. While the dough chills, preheat the oven to 375. Roll dough into balls, and then roll in a bowl of sprinkles. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the sides are golden.
